Dates: September 1st-2nd, 2018
Location: Whitewater, WI
It’s Labor Day Weekend – Let’s go backpacking & escape the crowds!
Join me for a beginner backpacking trip along Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail. All experience levels are welcome. This will be a great opportunity to try backpacking for the first time or get back into the activity after time away. This trip offers countless opportunities for real backpacking skill development such as hanging bear bags, purifying water, fire building skills & basic navigation. This trip is less than a 2 hr. drive from Chicago.
We will meet at the designated trailhead on Saturday, no later than 10 am to shuttle vehicles to the beginning & end of our hike. The hike will be a relaxed pace, allowing participants to adjust and get comfortable with their gear and ask questions along the way. We will hike about 6 miles on Saturday over varying terrain. This hilly segment of the IAT features wooded moraines, kettles, and views of Rice and Whitewater lakes. Along the route, there will be ample opportunities for sightseeing, wildlife viewing, and bird watching. Our hike will conclude at backpack shelter #3, where we will set up camp for the night. Once set up, we can enjoy some good food and conversation around the fire while taking in the sights and sounds of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.
On Sunday morning after breakfast, we will pack up, then hike back down the trail to our vehicles at the Blackhawk trailhead parking lot. For those looking to put in additional miles, there will be an option to hike + 4.5 miles to the beginning of the next segment, where my vehicle will be parked. If there is group interest, we can also meet at a local establishment to get a bite to eat before heading home.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us. We are more than happy to help!
It is very common for a beginner to not have all of the gear necessary for a first-time trip. We understand you may have gear needs, and we recommend a trip or two with borrowed gear before investing in some of the more expensive items (e.g. lightweight stove, water filter, backpack, etc).
If you need gear, please ask in the comments section first. Chances are another member may be able to help. If that doesn’t work, we also have a group gear shed for our meetup community with just about any item you’ll need on a first come first serve basis.
